Gobar means animal dung in Hindi. All of rural India uses it in a variety of ways. Ways that exemplify sustainable existence. That's why we use it, too.

THROW IT, FORGET IT
Life in Plastic!

Throw it forget it.  This is what all of you do.  But have you ever thought of me?  A plastic that is what I am.  I was created in a petrochemical factory and moulded into a fine cup. For some time, I languished in a godown then I traveled to a company to be used as a ice-cream cup.  After I had my fill of ice-cream, I was labeled , priced and sent to another store.  One day, a small girl bought me.  She ate my ice-cream and threw me in a bin.  (Thank God, she at least threw me in a bin.

I have to live with this misery, but I will not hesitate to cause misery to other people, too.  I will live for a billion years and throughout my life I will create problems for my creators and users.  I refuse to leave the earth in peace.

Many others throw my friends anywhere they feel like.)  I stayed in the bin for a whole night.  In the morning a municipality worker put me along with other wastes into a bigger bin and dumped me in a big yard.  The glasses, paper syringes, vegetable peels…told me that the name of the place is Bhalukhop.  We were stinking, tattered, broken and miserable.  I have to live with this misery, but I will not hesitate to cause misery to other people, too.  I will live for a billion years and throughout my life I will create problems for my creators and users.  I refuse to leave the earth in peace. My friends are equally angry.  My glass bottle and Styrofoam friends will live for as long as they want.  The aluminum cans will live for 200-500years.  And dispensable diapers for 500-600 years.  Only my lucky banana peel friend will die in a month’s time. A few days ago I heard a lady complaining about the smell from Bhalukhop dumpyard.  I wish they understood that all this is their doing.  The creators should not complain, can they?

Modern Aesop’s fable

Once upon a time there was a non-conforming swallow who decided not to fly south for the winter.  However, when the weather turned very cold he reluctantly started to  fly southwards.  In the short time ice began to form on its wings and it fell to the earth in a barnyard frozen still.  A cow passed by and crapped on the little swallow. The swallow that it was the end.  But the dung warned it and defrosted its wings. Warm and happy, able to breath, it started to chirp.  Just then a large tom-cat came by and hearing the chirping, found out where it was coming from, clawed away the dung and swallow the swallow.

Moral:  Every one who shits on you is not necessarily your enemy:  every one who gets you out of the shits is not necessarily your friend;  and if you are warm and happy in a pile of shit, keep your mouth shut.

The Heaven of Bio-gas
How the use of gobar can help stop deforestation

The use of biogas is very important and beneficial. This is a step taken to prevent deforestation.  This gas can be produced from cowdung, poultry droppings, human excreta. Mr Anand Mani Pradhan of 12th mile, Sindebong, is a person who is playing an important role in encouraging the people not only of Kalimpong but also of the surrounding areas to use biogas.  He has a small farm consisting of seven cows who produced the dung for the production of bio-gas.

Mr Anand Mani Pradhan is a person who is playing an important role in encouraging the people of not only Kalimpong but also of the surrounding areas to use biogas

First of all, a mixture is made of a bucket of dung with one-fourth bucket of water. The mixture is put in a small tank with an opening to a large air-tight chamber.  The large tank has to be filled up with about 15-20 quintals of such mixture at first.  Then a bucket each day.  After the gas is formed in the airtight chamber, the dung flows from there to another pit.  Finally the gas escapes through a pipe attached to the airtight chamber.  This gas can be directly used in producing electricity and cooking gas. Lastly the remaining slug can be immediately used as a fertilizer in the fields.  It is to be noted that fresh cowdung should never be used directly on the plants, as the dung contains acids and gases.

Thus, if this method is used by every citizen, then the problem of deforestation can be stopped to a great extent.  The bio-gas is a renewable source of energy;  it is even eco-friendly.

corner

The number of stray dogs in Kalimpong is rising and this has led to a lot of problems.  One being the fear of rabies because of which people have been poisoning the dogs not knowing that killing does not help.  The solution is to get them vaccinated.

One of the organizations where stray dogs hated by most people have found love and care is Animal Shelter in Bong Busty, which is run by the Darjeeling Goodwill Animal Shelter Trust.  The shelter gets stray dogs from Kalimpong town and nearby villages, vaccinated them, operates them for birth control and releases them back to where they belong.  “ Our target is to vaccinate 50 dogs every month.  In two years, we have treated 800 dogs,” says Khargeshwar Sharma, manager of the Animal Shelter, which also treats pet dogs.

A rabies injection costs Rs.310 and its effect lasts for a year for dogs.  All the collared dogs in the town have been vaccinated. If anyone finds an uncollared dog, please contact the shelter.
