Like the Dentam school they also have take time to bring drastic change in their resource management practices. Considering that most parts of Sikkim are rich in natural resources than it is indeed commendable that these schools are working so hard to improve their environment related practices. They were very confident of their work but they had very less time last year. She says the students did not cease the activity after July last year. The result of this ceaseless effort is that they have been able to bring a bewildering 100 points, 28 per cent improvement from last year. They reuse more waste water, more children come by walk to school, the school has more species of identified plants and animal species and more solid waste is segregated and recycled / reused then ever before. Government Girls High School, Kazibazar, Cuttack, Orissa

The first school from Odisha to win the green schools awards. The students of the school say that they were very confident of doing well in the programme since there school had won many national and international competitions previously. But, it to our utter astonishment the calculated data gave us a different picture that was not adequate for the said purpose. This gave us a big jolt at that moment and made us realize that much more needs to be done for sustaining our very lives. This experience gave us a lesson which not only got rid of our complacency but also made us aware that environmental activities are not one time act rather this has to be a continuous and comprehensive endeavor for sustainability.

Assam Valley School, Balipara, Assam

This is what Vidit Patni class IX wrote when we requested them to share interesting experiences about the programme, "One day, many of our group members got together and dug compost pits behind all the four boys' hostels. While digging these pits, all of us were covered from head to toe in mud. We even had a mud fight!  We thoroughly enjoyed it. Recently, as I was taking a walk, I went to see the pit behind our hostel and found it covered with weeds which I removed".

Keshab Bajaj class XI C wrote "We had great experience while working in the CSE Green School Programme. We worked with great zeal to see our school as Green School. Working in the energy audit was an eye opener for us, we learned a lot about data collection and calculation. It taught us that present data is as important as the data of the previous year. It was also shocking to find the level of energy consume in our school. Educating the utility workers of the school was a great experience. The question which they asked us was simple but it was very significant to the environment".

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GAIL DAV Public School, Dibiyapur, Uttar Pradesh

The state of Uttar Pradesh has surprised us this year with not one but two schools that have done commendable work. The school is a typical industrial township school. The infrastructure management and provision is a part of GAIL Pata Petrochemical Complex. The school submitted very convincing listing of support documents - Air consent, Water consent, Bio-medical waste authorisation, Environment statement, Water cess report, Water cess bill and Environment monitoring report. The students who participated in the audit feel that though they live in a clean and green environment the audit helped them get a different perspective on the definition of what the word green means.

Government High School, Dasgrain, Ropar, Punjab

Mr. Foran Chand Sharma (teacher in-charge) says: "Students went through various experiences while undertaking this project they got a lot of knowledge & information regarding the scientific names of the plants and animals.  Earlier they were not interested to stare & gaze these objects. But when they were made participants of this programmes their outlook changed a lot. They now have  developed an outlook to examine & study each & everything minutely".

Their earlier attitude. “ I have nothing to do with whatever is going on “ has been replaced by “I should improve & change whatever wrong is going on”.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

KV Air Force School, Begumpet, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh

A new central school from Andhra Pradesh. My colleague Ajanta Sikdar had visited the school during her stay in Hyderabad recently. She believes that the school community takes their water and land very seriously. The school community has already gone an extra mile to conserve their water, energy and land. They already put in a lot of effort in segregating and recycling their solid waste. Being a neighbourhoods school most of the people walk or cycle to school. The green schools programme has enabled them to take stock of how much they have already achieved and how much ground still needs to be covered.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sri Venkateshwar International School, Dwarka, Delhi

Government Senior Secondary School, Tingley, South Sikkim

The sensitivity the people of Sikkim have towards their environment is not surprising since they are a small hill state in the fragile himalayan ecosystem. The people of Sikkim are struggling to develop rapidly without endangering the balance of their ecosystem. The new generation of the state needs to learn how they can maintain a healthy relationship with their environment as they rapidly urbanise and develop. The medium and dimensions of their relationship with environment is what the green schools programme enables the students to understand says Mr. Ashish Pradhan the teacher in-charge of the eco-club.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Government High School, Baloh, District Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh

It is sometimes hard to imagine how a two day interaction with one teacher and two students from the school can lead to such an accurate report. The difference with the state of Himachal Pradesh is that the Sate Council for Science Technology and Environment is investing heavily in training of students. The teacher from the school Mr. Som Dev Nadda says that the students managed to infuse their enthusiasm and sense about the programme amongst their colleagues and that is what led to successful completion of the audit.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Government Senior Secondary School, Khalet, District Kangra, Himachal Pradesh

No frills when it comes to presentation of the report but the accuracy and strength of information the students have managed to gather is phenomenal. Ms. Neelam (teacher) says that for students it was surprising to know that how the sanitation facility is linked to per capita water consumption? By looking at the per capita consumption one could actually draw a picture of what will be the state of toilets in a school. The students now know why the toilets in their school, especially WCs can't be kept clean simply because they are overloaded.
