We heard!
In the June 30 issue of Gobar Times, we had asked our readers to "Be
Heard" through their write-ups on the environment. We are now publishing the response
we received to that.MAPS ARE FUN!
When we think of maps, our mind races to those "technical-looking" sheets of
paper in schools and colleges. We do not think of their reality at the ground-level or
maps in a social context. We don't realize that to explore the relationship between man
and the environment, we need maps.
Our organisation "Eklavya" in Hoshangabad
develops maps for children that are a combination of cartography and painting. Various
themes like mountains, rivers, people, cultivation, cities are shown.
For example, with a colourful Maharashtra map in hand the
children can identify various cultivation areas, the Western Ghats, mountains, rivers and
the like. Generally the children get a map where they have to figure out what the symbols
and colours stand for. It's easy because the basic concepts of these "new" maps
are the same as the regular ones.

APPEAL FOR WASTE MANAGEMENT!
One of the best ways to reduce plastic waste is to minimise its usage in the first place.
The public should force the Government to introduce measures to prevent the use of plastic
where it isn't necessary in large-scale packing industries. Products must also be designed
in such a way that they are repairable, reusable and recyclable. Industries should invest
a substantial part of their capital towards anti-pollution measures.

DEPLASTICISING CHENNAI SHOPS
Environmental organisation Exnora International is trying to get a total 3000 shops in
Chennai to switch from plastic to eco-friendly paper bags for both packaging in their
warehouses and carrybags for customers. One shop even offers discount to those who bring
in cloth bags.

HAPPY RAINS, SAD EFFECTS!
Monsoon is a word that is pleasing to everyone's ears after the scorching summer season.
In a place like Delhi, which has extremes of temperatures, light showers are greeted with
great joy and many people like to get wet in the rain. Men, animals and even plants look
forward to it.
But there are also many hassles because of it. Due to
rain there is lot of dirt and mud all over. Water logging and traffic jams are caused
because of heavy showers. There are many diseases because of poor hygiene and drainage as
stagnant water provides breeding grounds for disease causing insects. Due to heavy
rainfall, the water of the Yamuna rises affecting the people nearby. Thus monsoon relieves
us of the terrible heat and brings in fun and enjoyment but also leads to environmental
problems. Hope somebody does something about it.
