RAIN TIPS

When the rains come!

1. Don’t let water stagnate near your house. This will serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes, spreading malaria and dengue. Cover it with mud or make channels so that water flows into nearby drains.

2. Since you’ll stop using your coolers, empty and dry them, for they too can breed mosquitoes.

3. During monsoon, your water is more prone to get contaminated. If unsure, boil water before drinking it as an extra precaution.

4. Burn dry neem leaves to chase away mosquitoes and sleep in mosquito nets.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that you can do your part to make sure your taps don’t go dry long after the rains have gone and there isn’t an outbreak of malaria or dengue near your place. Here's how.

1. The water that falls on your roof is enough to recharge your groundwater for the rest of the year.
THIS INVOLVES YOU.

2. Vertical stormwater drains by the roads can further help and prevent the area from getting flooded.
THIS INVOLVES YOUR COMMUNITY.

3. Traditional lakes and water tanks are being misused for dumping waste. Desilting and widening them with means to channelise rainwater into them will come in handy during the summer.
THIS INVOLVES YOUR LOCALITY

1. Don’t throw garbage in open dustbins. These will overflow, fall down and get carried away to unwanted places by running water.

2. Don’t throw household rubbish in plastic bags. They will clog drains and help in water stagnatation.

Look up. You'll find water.
