p64_2.jpg Dear Friends at Gobar Times,
The world's largest oil company, Exxon Mobil (Esso), for decades has been opposing policies that would reduce the USA's need for oil. The company has not got the message of global warming.

So we have started the "Attack of the Speech Bubbles" campaign to stop Esso in its War-and-Global-Warming-fuelling tracks.

Thousands across the world are telling the company that they don't like the way it's controlling the US government's global warming policy.

You can also participate in the global campaign. We've created a web gallery where people can upload any picture of themselves, drag a speech bubble over their image, and say their piece to the world's number one environmental criminal.

Visit the website to know more about the campaign.

I am a class X student of Salwan Public School. Our school has taken up a lot of the environment friendly activities. The vermi-composting pit in our school is used to make manure from organic waste, a recharge well located in the school functions for water harvesting purposes. We also have a paper-recycling unit. Our school regularly conducts air and water monitoring activities. We have a very active environment club that conducts eco-tours, campaigns and organises events on important environment related days. To acknowledge the various activities undertaken by our school, the Department of Environment, Government of NCT of Delhi has selected our school as the lead school for the Central zone. It has also been adjudged as the "Best eco club school" for the year 2001-02. We believe this is just the beginning and we have a long way to go.

Hello Panditji,
In the April 15th issue Panditayinji has rightly said, "war is fought by old men ordering young men to kill." This is what we see in every battle. The ultimate sufferer is the common man especially women and children. The latest attack on Iraq was nothing but the stubbornness of two old men, which has killed thousands of people. It is definite that USA had oil in its game plan. After Afghanistan, Iraq falls to USA but now the question is which country is next on United States agenda? Destroy and rebuild and mint money is policy of United States. United State gains in every respect whether it is war or post–war reconstruction program. It is the common man, women and children who suffer the most.

p64_1.jpg Dear Panditji,
I am a grade 7 student studying at Our Lady of Providence School, Brampton, Ontario. The grade 7 and 8 students at our school have created a "massive" sized website. The site is entitled: "Kids For Kyoto", and is based on the Protocol passed by government leaders in Kyoto, Japan. This website is all about Global Warming, Climate Change, What Kids Can Do About It, and more. The site has been created entirely by the students, each group of students doing research and designing their own pages for our site. There are many, many pages within our site as well as links to other related websites. Please keep in mind that it reflects the various achievement levels of students in Ontario, meaning that it is purposely not perfect.

Is it fair to define human violence as male violence?
Indira Gandhi liberated Bangladesh. Rani Lakshmibai defended her kingdom in the face of imminent death. Margaret Thatcher fought for British pride in the Falklands. History suggests that violence is not gender-biased. It is the individual’s upbringing and his/her circumstances that are the key factors.

War or terrorism is one aspect of violence. Be it Saas-Bahu or Bhabhi-Nand, the television does reflect violence amongst women. Due to traditional segregation in professions (like politics and the military for men and households for women) an incorrect stereotype of males being warmongers exists. Violence by no means is an entirely negative force. Whatever connotations it might have, the career women of today, our women politicians, or even women fighting for elevated domestic status are all using this human instinct to crush the ‘enemy’. Violence can breed competition and liberation. Both can be viewed as positive forces or examples of ‘violence’ in women. It would therefore be inappropriate to stereotype violence based on gender.
