Sample message:

Dear Plastic Manufacturers,

I am concerned at the increasing use of plastics in packaging in India. Despite all the professed benefits plastics are supposed to bring, disposal of plastic waste and its associated health and environmental risks cannot be ignored. Most of the packaging is wasteful and unnecessary in the first place. Disposing plastic in landfills or burning is harmful to the environment. Besides plastics cannot be ‘recycled’, they can only be ‘down-cycled’.

I hope your company will take steps to honour your ’manufacturer responsibility’ in disposing the plastic waste generated by you in a safe manner. I also sincerely wish that your industry tries to look at ways of reducing indiscriminate use of plastics to save our environment and lives!

From February 15 to 20, 2003, plastic merchants from all over the country are gathering at an exhibition called PlastIndia in New Delhi. An exhibition to promote and sell the virtues of plastics in packaging. To produce more plastic and to make more profit.

If you are someone who wants the plastic industry to sit up and look at the ugly side of plastic packaging, join us in this protest. Please send us your messages and statements on plastic disposables in a plastic bottle (or if that is too difficult, just a slip of paper will do - we’ll put it in a bottle for you). Do remember to sign it with your name and city though. We’ll hand bottles with messages to a representative of the plastic industry as a symbol of our protest, during PlastIndia.
