Namaste Panditji...

I am studying in the Indian Institute of Plantation Management, Bangalore, specialising in Environment Management.

I will be studying around 20 industries of all sizes. Can you please suggest me what can be the main industries near Bangalore, that I should study. Also please give me some tips in preparing a good questionnaire. My study will focus on four basic points:

*Compliance with local and federal laws
*Steps taken in minimisation of toxic releases to air, water and soil
*Energy efficiency
*Production & packaging

Dear Mohantyji,
There are a variety of industries around Bangalore, mostly software.

There are some automobile companies, electronic companies, food processing companies, etc. Karnataka State industrial development board has also developed an industrial estate called Bidadi industrial estate, some 31 km from Bangalore. The major company here is Toyota. There is also Yalachahally village near Bangalore where Volvo plant is located.

You could include a variety of industries as you are focussing on compliance, even hotels for that matter.

Regarding designing of questionnaire, make your questionnaire simple, and not very complicated. You could ask for the following:

1. Compliance – Consent status of the companies (whether they have obtained clear consent for discharge of waste water, for air emissions or for hazardous waste handling); has any show cause notice been filed against the company; any cases by SPCB; any closure notice; have they had to pay any fine, etc. Also ask for monitoring reports for waste water, air emissions with the SPCB's standards. You can also ask if the company has any internal standards.

2. For steps taken in minimisation of toxic releases to air, water and soil – You can ask about the ETP, its description, air pollution control equipment attached to various air pollution sources, various solid waste generated, is it reused or disposed? How is it reused or disposed? What initiatives have been taken by the company for minimisation of waste such as process or technology modification, etc.

3. Energy efficiency — Request for the total energy consumption, convert to a common unit and then deduct per unit energy consumption. Or else, ask the industry to provide the per unit energy consumed. However, comparison would be more valid only in case of similar products and operations. You should also ask for energy conservation measures.

Check up the Green Ratings Programme (GRP) page in www.cseindia.org. The questionnaires that CSE used for pulp and paper companies, automobile companies, and chlor-alkali companies are there as pdfs.

I am doing an internship at 'National centre for Advocacy Studies', at Pune. What is the current status of forest cover in India?

Dear Sharmaji,
According to the Ministry of Environment and Forests, India, the area under forest cover is 67 million hectares, under miscellaneous tree crop and groves is 3 million hectares, and under permanent grazing lands and pastures is 12 million hectares. This out of a total land area of 328.7 million hectares.
