The Junior School students of Bal Bhawan school, Laxmi Nagar, New Delhi share their views with GT on recycling and ecological restoration.

Reuse and recycling of wastes of human civilization in all forms is the need of the day. The most possible solution that suggests itself is that wasteful and non-essential consumption should be crushed as much as possible so that enough resources can become available for meeting the basic needs of the people without imposing excessive burden on environment. Here we are reminded of Mahatma Gandhi’s words: "Nature has enough to satisfy everyone’s need but not everyone’s greed."

Mohammed Shahid

Recycling is an important form of dealing with waste. On one hand there are kabaris who deal in relatively cleaner form of solid waste like newspapers, plastic bottles, etc. The waste pickers or ‘rag pickers’ do the other type of waste that is dirtier. About 1 lakh rag pickers in Delhi are exposed to numerous health hazards as they forage through garbage. These rag pickers are responsible for cleaning as much as 15% of Delhi’s total garbage.

Bio-methanation, producing bio-gas, is a process in which municipal waste can be converted into Methane to be used as cooking gas. There are some drum-type biogas plants which are available. These have been reasonably successful and are in use in many villages and cities.

But there are a few substances which cannot be degraded. Recycling in this case is important to reduce their accumulation.

What kind of animal am I?
by Tanmay Bhatt, Noida

I compare myself to the great black panther. You see I know many characteristics of the black panther. It is very concentrative, very determined and very dangerous cat. I have great concentration in doing things that I like, like writing letters and reading about animals. I am also dangerous for my sister who gets scared to see me. I cannot see as good as the panther, but I can see little in the night when there is no light. This enables me to see and reach up to the candle or the torch. I am sensitive too when I think someone especially my sister is going to play a trick on me but when I am about to play a trick on her, I do not let her know at all!
