The Road Review

Global Warming. This word is supposed to be known by the people of today. New Delhi is hosting the eighth Conference of Parties (COP-8) to the United Nations Framework Conference on Climate Change (UNFCCC), starting today. But most of Delhi’s population seems to be unaware of it. Gobar Times reporters went around India Gate on October 23, asking people about global warming and climate change. On an average, 90 per cent of the people interviewed did not know about this or had their own stories to tell. Out of these 90 per cent people, there were also some foreign tourists who were visiting India. While most of the people said global warming was caused by pollution, Mr S. Biswas took the trouble to find out and gave us a lot of information on global warming. There was another person who said that there is a blanket covering the earth and there is a hole in that curtain because of the sunís heat. Some people like Ms Sumanadi said that global warming is caused because of bombing. No one talked about submerging of land masses except a very few. Most people were just interested in going to hill stations in summers. Some school students like Abhishek of class 8 said it is because of the hole in the ozone layer.

Many things have been done to increase the awareness among school children but to reach out to others, some events must be done at public level. Some demonstrations should be organized to tell the common man about global warming and this needs to be done not only in Delhi but also in other states of India.

Richi Kashyap and Sambuddha Mukherjee

Mr Lieb (South Africa)
GT: What do you think about climate change?
Lieb: It is a serious problem in which there is lack of water. Something should be done by the world unanimously on it, so that our next generations get enough of water.
GT: Sir, do you think that the COP-8 meeting held at Vigyan Bhavan would help in this matter?
Lieb: May be, but not much.

hot_shot.jpg Mr Hatcher (England)
GT: Sir, what do you think about climate change?
Hatcher: It is a very serious problem; we live in England where there is not much of pollution and India should do more things about it.
GT: Sir, do you think that the COP-8 would help in this matter?
Hatcher: Yes, it should as it is for noble cause.

Vijay Ram (India)
GT: Sir, what do you think about climate change?
Vijay Ram: CNG is really harmful to people and should be banned in use. The poor farmers suffer the most and it is like a deadly disease.
GT: Sir, do you think that the COP-8 summit would help in this matter?
Vijay Ram: Certainly not because there have already been 7 COPs but nothing came out of it.
