Profiles of Top 10 schools in Delhi not in order of ranks

Pinnacle School, Panchsheel Enclave, New Delhi

It is said that necessity is the mother of invention. This holds true of Pinnacle school, they have limited space because of which they have learnt to make optimum use of space available to them. They have chosen to maintain adequate greens and diversity over extending their building and accommodating more students which is the usual trend most schools follow. Students from the school handle the green schools programme completely. Teachers just have to arrange for submission of report. They have extended their solid waste management to the posh neighbourhood around their school. Though initially they could register limited success the school students persisted to bring the change. They have now reached a level where they have very limited scope for bringing drastic change. Their are students who have been with the programme for more than four years of their 5 year journey.

St.Georges School, Alaknanda, New Delhi

Entire school is engaged in the green schools activity. Like many other schools they use the green schools programme activity to assess students for the new CCE evaluation system introduced by CBSE. They have also extended their work to the community. Persistent effort to get more student to school by school bus and by walk is slowly bearing fruit. You have heard about their effort on waste water reuse already. Like most schools who have been with us in the change makers section for four or more years they are left with very little room for improvement. But the school community says that the challenge is not only to improve further but bigger challenge is to maintain the massive changes they have already managed to bring.

Gyan Mandir Public School, Naraina, New Delhi

The school has stood on the stage in 2006 also. They discontinued with the programme for a few years because the driving force of the programme the teachers left the school. Now that they are back the school community is back as change maker. The school is located in a densely populated area and it is extremely difficult to change and maintain practices related to transport and solid waste. The school has achieved remarkable success in changing its commuting practices in favour of walking and cycling. Changes introduced for management of solid waste are remarkable. Almost everything that is reusable is collected, segregated, stored and sold to Kabadiwalas.

This year the students have compiled and presented and immaculate report. The school campus is a part of a larger campus that consists of four more schools. Rainwater harvesting, waste water reuse systems are common for the set of schools housed in the campus. You heard about the solid waste management efforts in the neighbourhood from their sister school in the begining.

They vehicles are 16 per cent more efficient than last year. Per capita energy consumption has been brought down by 2 Mega joules (10 per cent) from last year. Heritage School, Gurgaon

Heritage school had tried to do the green schools audit last year also. They were shocked to find out their water consumption which was way above the averages set in the green schools programme manual. The school community and management took this very seriously and sent two teachers to CSE to find out whether their calculations were correct and what they should do about it. This year the GSP audit was part of their annual calender and was done by the entire 7th grade which is about 250 students. They completed the audit and the students presented the report to the management of the school with action points on what they immediately need to do. The wonderful part is that in return the management of the school did a presentation to students and promised action. Part of the work they had promised has already been put on ground. Six buses have already been converted to CNG and they plan to convert 2 more this year. A proper dispersal plan for the school has been prepared to check pollution from idling vehicles, Car pooling is being promoted big time by students through parent interaction during PTMs. The plan to install waste water reuse system to check their dependence on ground water. Summerfields school, Kailash Coloney

We were wondering how did Summerfields school get into doing the green schools programme? The visit to the school answered our question. As I was escorted into the Principal's room I wished the familiar face of Ms. Reema Alex Daniel and I immediately knew the reason for Summer Fields doing the green schools programme. Ms. Daniel happens to be the ex-principal of St. Pauls school, Hauz Khas which had once held top rank amongst Delhi schools. The school is located in a densely populated post locality of South Delhi and the typical traffic and parking problems of such localities are all present there. Ms. Daniel motivated the teachers and students to address the issues related to environment and suggested that the green schools programme is the best way to do that.
