200 litres of soft drink consumed on an average per year by every British child.

Beware! Ants at work

Germany has introduced new laws making it illegal to kill ants and appointed 85 ant protection officers to protect them. Homeowners and garderners who attempt to destroy an anthill or underground nest will face hefty fines if caught.

They must now apply for a permit from their local forestry office to have the ants carefully moved to local woods.

The US Department

The US Department of Defense generates 750,000 tonnes of hazardous waste a year, more than the five largest chemicals companies combined.

Waste in India

Government buildings in India waste 20-25% of the total electricity they consume.

Of the government’s total annual power consumption worth Rs 600 crore, there is annually Rs 150 crore of financial loss.

Everyday 2 million tonnes of waste is poured into water, while 1 litre of wastewater pollutes 8 litres of freshwater.

Fished Out

Only 10 percent of big ocean fish left. Large predatory fish – Antarctic cod, tuna and swordfish – are disappearing from the world`s oceans, with their numbers down by 90 percent in the past 50 years. Industrial fishing has scoured the global ocean.

An equal presence

The peacocks share something in common with the people of a drought-prone village in Chincholi Morachi, near Pune.

Their numbers. The village population is nearly the same as the number of peacocks.
