Are we spending enough on education?

Did you know the number of illiterate people in our country? 282 million. Yes, that’s right. Now, take a wild guess at the amount of money the Indian government is spending to mend that number. You would imagine a lot, right? Well, let us bring to your attention some numbers that matter. Where does Education stand in the recently announced Union Budget 2015?

What the Government spends on Education

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) handles school, higher education and adult literacy. It accounts for only 5 percent of the government’s expenditure. That is Rs 17 lakh crore. This figure, please note, has been increasing over the past few years though.

Education Vs other ministries

Last financial year, the MHRD was ranked 5th, with only 4.6 percent of the total central government budget set aside for education.

The Ministry of Finance topped the list with 35 percent, followed by the Ministry of Defence at 16 percent, Ministry of Food at 6 percent and Ministry of Rural Development at 4.7 percent.

India vs the world

Average public spending on education across the world was 4.9 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). India spent only 3.3 percent. Here is a comparison of the expenditure on education by India and some other countries.
