Dear Gobar Times Readers,
One day, a long time ago, Prince Siddharth went on a chariot ride outside his palace. As
he rode through the city, the people bowed to him. But instead of being pleased, Siddharth
was horrified. For among those who bowed, there were a kind of people he had never seen
before.
These people were strange. They wore torn clothes. They had running sores and scars on
their hands and bodies, and their faces were lean.
The Prince asked his charioteer: "Channa, what kind of people are these?"
"Poor people, my prince," the charioteer replied. The Prince was bewildered. He
asked: "But why are people poor?"

Everybody knows India is a country full of poor people. But when you ask some people this
question, they get embarrassed. Others bluster and holler: "lets not talk
about it!" Yet others shrug their shoulders and say: "we dont know."
Some say that in the last 10 years a few people in India have got richer while many,
many others have got poorer. Others say that given the way India is developing, people can
only get richer.
