blck holes World rocked by major controversy

Are the Big Bang tests pure science, or will the world come to an end?

Trigger a classroom debate – ‘Black holes on Earth’.

What is CERN?

CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, is one of the world’s largest and most respected centres for scientific research. Its business is fundamental physics, finding out what the Universe is made up of and how it works.

What is Large Hadron Collider?

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a gigantic scientific instrument at CERN near Geneva, where it spans the border between Switzerland and France about 100 metres underground. It is a particle accelerator used by physicists to study the smallest known particles – the fundamental building blocks of all things.

Are Black hole fears "baseless"?

Fears have emerged that the collider could produce black holes, which may suck up everything around them, including the whole Earth.

Although physicists acknowledge that the collider could, in theory, create small black holes, they assure that these holes do not pose any risk. A study released by CERN scientists explains that any black hole created would be tiny, and would not have enough energy to stick around for very long before dissolving.

"The gravitational force is so weak that you'd have to wait many, many, many, many, many lifetimes of the universe before one of these things could [get] big enough to even get close to being a problem," says Huth, professor of physics at Harvard University.
