Ask me! No?

 A  PONDERING PANDITJI

Hey folks,

I have been wondering lately — has the world gone completely mad? I know that sounded rather weird, so let me explain.

Right now, more than 100 million people across the globe are facing starvation because of a dramatic rise in food prices. They can no longer afford to buy even the basic staples like wheat, rice and corn. And what has triggered this crisis? No, it is not divine wrath, or curse of the devil. Experts say erratic weather patterns and monsoons — a direct impact of global warming — is the real reason. So this is not a temporary trend, but a critical shift in environment. The crisis is climate change, and the malnourished millions are climate victims. They are victims of a human made disaster.

How? Well, its been proved beyond doubt now that the bulk of greenhouse emissions are related to burning of fossil fuels, for the energy that drives the world economy! But are we trying to find a way out of the mess we have created? Oh yes, we have discovered biofuels! We are converting large tracts of lands — that till now grew food — to grow crops that produce fuel, which will drive our cars and planes and help us cut emissions. In the future. Meanwhile, it is drastically cutting down food production. We are growing crops to feed cars while our children starve…

Have we gone mad?
