Villages worth visiting

Sukhomajri and Bunga: These two villages in Haryana have shown the way in managing their natural resources. The local common village land had turned into a wasteland due to overgrazing leading to soil erosion and people were migrating out. But by building check dams and prevention of grazing on forest commons, they have revived the ecology of the village.

Laporiya: This village located at the edge of the Thar desert with a very minimal average annual rainfall, also suffered droughts and severe water shortages. But then with the help of the village youth, old irrigation tanks were made functional and rainwater was collected from the catchment with innovative methods. The groundwater level, too has improved considerably as a result of rainwater harvesting.

Ralengaon Siddhi: This once impoverished village in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra was transformed into a self-sufficient one with the efforts of Anna Hazare, an armyman who came back to his native village and mobilised the villagers. It started when a percolation tank was made in 1975 and the seven wells below it swelled with water for the first time in the living memory of the people.
