| MURUGAN’S TREES
Publisher – Words Worth
Author – Amit Dahiya
Targetted at primary school
students, Amit Dahiya’s
“Murugan’s Trees” is the
story of a family living in a
small village in South India.
This short tale
interestingly brings
together a variety of
environmental issues through its
simple yet descriptive story. In the
book, Murugan plans to sell his trees
in order to make some fast bucks.
Although warned by his family not to
do so, Murugan decides to cut the
trees. The aftermath of his decision is
what the book is about.
The simple style of writing is the
strength of the book. The use of
pictures on each page helps taking
the story forward.
The author hardly leaves any
stones unturned to
highlight the benefits of
trees and their linkage to
the day to day life of a
human being. So, when a
character falls ill, it is the
fruit of a particular tree,
which is used to cure him.
However, as the
author describes it as a
‘fable’, the characters of
Murugan and his family
members could have been better
etched out, which would have made
the story more interesting.
Nevertheless ‘Murugan’s Trees’ is
an easy and informative read for
young children everywhere.
(The author is also a poet and runs a
group called Delhi Poetree. He has
written numerous poems on
environment and nature.)
