Travelling Turtles

Loggerheads are among the largest of marine turtles, sometimes measuring more than 4 feet in shell length and weighing up to 400 pounds! Their major nesting grounds are in the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic. In the Mediterranean, they nest along the coasts of Turkey, Libya and Cyprus. But, recently researchers have spotted record numbers of loggerhead turtles in waters of Sicily, Calabria, Puglia and even Sardinia! Seems like that even these turtles love to travel!

Hunting Hudson

The mysterious Hudson Canyon has been mapped! The Canyon is hidden beneath hundreds of feet of water. It was created by the Hudson River mainly during the last Ice Age! The canyon lies hundred miles off the New Jersey-New York coast, and its undersea region rivals that of the Grand Canyon in scale. A four-year study has produced maps that will allow scientists to explore this region.
Hmm... nothing lies hidden these days.

Newest Birdie!

A new species of bird has been discovered in India! The Bugun Liocichla, a kind of babbler, is named after the Bugun tribe in Arunachal Pradesh state. The Bugun measures 22cm and is strikingly hued in various shades of olive with bright coloured patches all over! The bird’s population has only 14 birds, including three breeding pairs. The discovery joins three others named in the Liocichlas genus — the Liocichlas Phoenicea, the Liocichlas Steerii and Liocichlas Omeiensis — found only in Asia from northeast India to Vietnam!

Anti-vaccine

Got a wound? Stay away from oily fish, meat and even dairy products! Wondering why? Because toxic chemicals such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) found in everyday food, especially in the above mentioned, may prevent vaccines from working properly in children! Routine immunisations such as tetanus and diphtheria may work less efficiently and render children more susceptible to infections!

Greying Reds

Red squirrel species may disappear within a decade! Grey squirrels are wiping them out! An international study has blamed a virus, which is transmitted to the red squirrels by the grey ones. The virus kills them within a fortnight! The squirrel poxvirus disease may completely eradicate the Red squirrels that have been in Britain for the last 10,000 years and are protected under the UK's Wildlife and Countryside Act. The greys were introduced from the United States more than 100 years ago.

The volcano song

No, it’s not some latest chartbuster. It is the song two volcanoes are going to sing! And save lives! The singers are Mount Etna in Sicily and Mount Tungurahua in Ecuador. These volcanoes “sing” using a new technology that transforms a volcano’s behavior into sound waves. Different melodies represent various stages of their volcanic activity. And this would help to detect an imminent eruption!
