Become a wildlife biologist
It may not be a very lucrative career, but promises a lifetime of excitement

Those who want to study wildlife biology formally at university level would need to have a science background. But then famous wildlife experts were those who had no books but only fierce passion and interest.

India has a few institutes that offer courses in wildlife biology and conservation.

Wildlife biologistDehradun: Wildlife Institute of India, offers a two-year M.Sc. course in Wildlife Science; Forest Research Institute.

Bangalore: Centre for Ecological Sciences, IISc; Wildlife Conservation Society-India offers a MSc course in Wildlife Biology and Conservation at the National Centre for Biological Sciences.

Mumbai: Bombay Natural History Society. Has courses for professionals and ametuers in conservation.

Coimbatore: Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History

Ahemdabad: Centre for Environment Education. Popular environment education.

Pondicherry: University of Pondicherry. Graduate courses. Ofcourse you have many many more options in unversities and organisations abroad.

For beginners there are nature camps organised regularly in all parts of India by well known organisations like WWF and BNHS. Find out if any local NGO or Nature Club in your town or city offers any such activity.

Wild Doctor
Now that’s a unique profession. There are not many trained wildlife vets in our country, so there is a constant demand for them.

Wild Activist
You need not be a scientist to be a wildlife activist who fights for the cause of protecting wildlife.

All you need is a certain passion and commitment. There are many who have converted that interest into very sucessful careers as wildlife campigners, lawyers, journalists, researchers, filmakers.

The trigger happy Nawab of Pataudi was nabbed thanks to vigilant activists and lawyers from such NGOs.

Wild Artist
Have fun, become famous!

Map your wildlife
Wildlife is all around us. We don’t need to go too far to observe and study wild creatures. Even in the middle of your city, a concrete jungle, you will be amazed to find all kinds of wild creatures.

So why don’t you create your own mini wildlife course. Urban wildlife may not be as exciting and colourful and fascinating as that in a rainforest but you can still surprise yourself.

Doing a thorough and comprehensive biodiversity mapping of your school premises will give you a good understanding of all the kinds of plants and animals that exist on your campus or building.

Create a site map and with the help of your biology teacher observe and make a list of different kinds of plants and animals that live around your school.

Classify them into various groups such as anthropods, mammals, insects etc.

Look out for any endangered or rare species that you might encounter.

Try and speak to an expert ecologist for tips on biodiversity mapping and conservation.

Display your Wild Work with your teachers and fellow students. Create a conservation plan for your school. To know how to assess the biodiversity status of your school get a copy of the ‘Green School Manual’ from CSE.

Write to sumita@cseindia.org. for more details.
