Dear Gobar Times Readers,

ReadersImagine living in a world without colours! Eating food without colours. Wearing clothes without colours. A holi without colours...stuff that nightmares and horror movies are made of. Right? Colours make up our lives. We see, think and, of course, we dream in colour.

But wait! When have you last thought about colours. Where do they come from…how are they made…who makes them? This issue of Gobar Times takes you for a trip into the life of colours. The ones that are made by human beings.

It’s a fascinating journey. You discover that ‘making colours’ has been one of India’s oldest professions. Different communities living in different parts of the country have borrowed from nature — the flowers, roots and leaves — and created sparkling fresh hues. For generations. And made a living out of it.

But it’s a very disturbing journey too. Because as you travel down the years you find that nature has been slowly elbowed out, to make place for chemicals. Harsh, harmful stuff, that is poisoning not only the environment but your skin and your body too!

We have opted for synthetics because they are cheaper and easier to make. But the real price we pay for using these is frighteningly high…We need to take stock now. You as a ‘user’ of colours can make a huge change. Are you ready for it?
