?Hello Panditji
I am a Class XII student at Nath Valley School. As the school
captain, I would like you to suggest a few ideas for our schools student council to
play a creative role in conducting environmental activities. We put up articles on our
notice boards to promote environ-mental awareness. Weve also banned plastic in the
school premises.

DEAR SAGAR JI,
Delighted to know about your interest
in improving the schools environment. There are two ways you could pitch in. We have
started a network called the GT reporters network to seek contribution from students all
over India for GT. We would be glad to carry reports on environment from your school.
Theres another inter-esting activity for you.
Recently, CSE launched a man-ual for schools called the Green
Schools Programme manual to do a self-assessment on environment. The manual will tell
you where your school stands against the standards of an ideal school which should-have
zero environmental impact. Your school can send a cheque or demand draft drawn for
Rs.125/- in favour of Centre for Science and Environment payable at Delhi and
get a copy. All the best and get cracking ideas

?Hello Panditji
I study in Vijaya High
School, Bangalore and am doing a project on wastewater management. Can you give some
guidance on the methods of recycling wastewater?
Which is the most economical method and needs less apparatus?
Ashwini K Murthy, Via Email
HELLO ASHWINIJI,
There are two kinds of
wastewater-grey water and blackwater. Greywater comes from kitchen sinks and bathrooms and
black water, from toilets. Both can be recycled but recy-cling blackwater requires special
technology. Most wastewater treatment plants recycle water, using chemicals, but some have
settling tanks and sand filters. Scientists are now recognising nature's simple processes
and are designing systems based on sand dunes and natural marshes. In schools and homes,
you could manage wastewater through recycling. (For more information, see Gobar Times,
August, 2004, page 64.) |
