Digging up a Dinosaur

One of the best preserved skeletons of dinosaur, named Linheraptor Exquisitus, was found in the Gobi desert of China by two North American PhD students. It was a chance discovery when Michael Pittman from University College London, and Jonah Choiniere from George Washington University, found the dinosaur’s claw sticking out of a cliff.

Linheraptor was found in the red sandstone rocks of Inner Mongolia and is the fifth dromaeosaurid discovered in these rocks, which are famous for harbouring uncrushed skeletons within their layers.

Odour Matters!

What you do to prevent body odour? Spray deodorant on your body! And this is exactly what the Chinese government is doing to fight its smelly landfills in Beijing. It is installing 100 giant guns of deodorant at a dumpsite called Asuwei, after people living around it complained of stink. These  high-pressure guns can spray gallons of fragrance per minute with a range of up to 20 feet.

Also at places the government will cover the trash with  plastic to trap the smell. The real solution lies elsewhere though. If this city of 17 million people recycle only four per cent of the 18,000 tonnes of trash they generate everyday, the need for such expensive odour-concealers would disapear.

Iceberg Art

Dutch artist Ap Ven says that he wants to set up visible landmarks on the melting ice. He is particularly worried about the ice layers on which  dog-sledge races are held in his country. They are too fragile now and unfit for even walking, he says. Meanwhile, pipeline projects to explore the Arctic are being conditionally approved by governments. Like the US $15.4 billion Mackenzie pipeline to be laid in the Canadian Arctic. Is Ap Ven listening?
